The unprecedented rise in popularity of the multiplayer online game Among Us would go down as one of 2020’s most memorable events in the world of gaming.
Among Us has only been released on Mobile (Android and iOS) and PC.
But many users have been wondering if the addictive game is available on console, or if there is a way to play it for free on console, similar to how you can play it on PC and Mac via BlueStacks (check out our article on that here).
For those who are unaware of what Among Us is about, Among Us is an online multiplayer space-themed game, where you and your team of human crewmates have to complete tasks on a spaceship.
One to three of your teammates who are alien imposters tries to kill you all and sabotage the mission.
Without further ado, the simple and short answer to the question of whether it is possible to play Among Us on console is No.
Among Us is currently unavailable on PlayStation and Xbox and there is currently no way to play the game on console.
Meanwhile, there have been a lot of clickbait articles and videos on Tiktok and YouTube claiming that Among Us is coming to PS4 and Xbox.
Some claimed the game is already available on consoles, and many have gone viral.
Let us examine the facts and see what the developers of the game had to say about the future of Among Us.
In a blog post published back in September by Innersloth, the developers of the Among Us game, they wrote and I quote.
“Hey everyone, PuffballsUnited here! It’s been a very exciting time for us the past few months! We’ve absolutely loved seeing everyone enjoying Among Us! Forte has been working hard to get the servers adjusted to deal with the huge influx of players. Thank you so much for bearing with us through these growing pains. Hopefully we can get started on new content soon! Speaking of new content…
Us devs have had several long discussions about what we want to do with the game. When do we stop working on Among Us 1? What content goes into Among Us 2? The main reason we are shooting for a sequel is because the codebase of Among Us 1 is so outdated and not built to support adding so much new content. However, seeing how many people are enjoying Among Us 1 really makes us want to be able to support the game and take it to the next level. We have decided to cancel Among Us 2 and instead put all our focus into improving Among Us 1. All of the content we had planned for Among Us 2 will instead go into Among Us 1. This is probably the more difficult choice because it means going deep into the core code of the game and reworking several parts of it. We have lots of things planned and we’re excited to bring new content to everyone as you continue to enjoy playing!”

The developers had earlier planned to release a sequel to Among Us 1 mainly because the codebase of Among Us 1 is so outdated and it would be difficult to add new content to it.
Considering that it was not built to support adding so much new content.
This already makes it difficult to bring the game to console, since the core code is outdated and it may not be able to keep up with the new consoles like PS4 and Xbox One.
Meanwhile, the developers are working on reworking the games core code to support more amazing new content. When/if a sequel is released then we can be more certain of finally getting to play Among Us on console.
The developers of Among Us also held a twitch stream in October discussing the future of the game.
The development team explained that while Among Us works easily and smoothly on PC, Android and iOS devices with the touchscreen commands or keypads available, consoles use controllers.
This would mean that the Among Us team has to work out a way to provide an easy way for gamers to communicate in the game, without slowing down the gameplay.
They considered using a system similar the “quick comms” system from rocket league – a system that provides information faster than quick chats.
To enable them develop a new communication system for the game on PS4 and Xbox One, since the standard text and voice-based chat seemed unusable.
The progress with that is still unknown.
The sudden spike in reception of the game has not really prepared the developers for a time like this.
This is quite evident in how their servers were overloaded due to the sudden increase in players and the game’s programmer Forest Willard said it was “a totally free Amazon server”.
The game’s developers have tried their best to adjust their servers and solve most of these issues. Therefore, it is understood if the platform availability is still limited.
The developers are still putting out a lot of updates. Since August, they have managed to increase playerbase, they added more servers, added three regions, and they managed to implement longer game codes to support more concurrent games.
Would Among Us be available on console anytime soon? That seems really unlikely in the nearest future because it would be very difficult to implement using a controller to play the game.
It is easier on PC and Mobile because typing messages and completing tasks is much easier using a keyboard, mouse or a touch screen compared to using a controller on PS4 or Xbox One to do complete these functions. Among Us does not just seem like it was built to work on consoles.
The console port currently does not seem like a top priority for the developers of the game, as it was not on the list of upgrades coming soon to the game according to a recent developer blog.
We might just never know for sure if or when Among Us would be available on console.
Stay tuned to our blog because we would keep you updated on the progress.
